Overview

An incident of horse doping at a stable inside Jamaica Racetrack in 1938 brought to mind the laxity with which the sport of horse racing was addressing the doping issue. By the early 20th Century jockey clubs and other organizations had clamped down on horse doping. However by the early 1930s the regulations had been allowed to lapse. My book addresses the broader issue of horse doping and a particular case in which a Brooklyn gambler was caught red handed in the stall of the race horse Retlaw. The thoroughbred was slated to race later the same day in the third race at Empire City.
