Overview

Published in 1917, this is the third volume of Richardson's masterful Pilgrimage sequence, tracing the life and interior consciousness of heroine Miriam Henderson by means of the then-revolutionary stream-of-consciousness technique (though Richardson herself preferred the term "interior monologue").  Miriam becomes a governess for the wealthy Corrie family while her mother's health deteriorates.

About the Author

Dorothy M. Richardson (1873-1957) was an English novelist, journalist, and teacher.  Her life's work was a 13-volume novel series entitled Pilgrimage, comparable in scope to the work of Proust and regarded as an early milestone in feminist fiction, in which she pioneered the modernist literary technique of stream of consciousness.
