No longer guarding palaces, they are loyal family companions, taking their watchdog jobs seriously. Honeybun takes her job seriously, until someone bends down to pet her. She starts to growl, but immediately turns over on her back to have her tummy rubbed. Honeybun loves everybody. She is very lonely after school begins, and her curiosity gets the best of her. After her masters, Mother, Father, Craig, Brad, and Chad leave for work and school, she jumps on the gate when she hears a dog barking, and it opens. Being curious about the beautiful, black, curly dog in her yard, she plays with him and follows him into the neighborhood until she is hopelessly lost. While searching for her home and her backyard, she plays with some kids along the way. Then, some boys throw rocks at her because she keeps chasing them as they ride their bicycles. Eventually, her three boy masters find her and take her home. Time passes and Honeybun begins to eat ravenously and gain weight. She tears and hides old newspapers under a shelf. Then, one day Honeybun builds a nest of the torn newspapers on her bed, and when her masters return from work and school, she has a big surprise for them.

CHAPTER 1

Honeybun is a Lhasa Apso. The Lhasa Apso was once native to Tibet and was a highly regarded watchdog in palaces. It no longer guards palaces but is a loyal family companion. It is not usually very aggressive, but it can be. Honeybun, however, is not very big and is a very loving dog. She loves everyone. She takes her watchdog job seriously, though, and barks at strangers until someone bends down to pet her. Then, she slowly rolls on her back to have her tummy rubbed.

Her beautiful, silky hair is a rich honey color; it is very thick and straight. She has large sparkling eyes that can barely be seen peeking through, since hair hangs down in front of her face most of the time. Few puppies are cuter than a Lhasa, and when Honeybun came to live with the family, she was a tiny ball of fur darting here and there and full of curiosity. Lhasas do not usually mind staying home alone, but Honeybun is different. She gets lonely sometimes.

Honeybun has five masters. They are Daddy, Mother, and three boys named Craig, Brad, and Chad. Craig and Brad are in fourth and fifth grades, and Chad is in first grade. During the summertime, they are at home and play with her quite often, but during the school year, she does not see them as much. Sometimes, a dog from the neighborhood puts a nose through the fence, and they bark, lick, and growl at each other. That's kind of fun. Then, sometimes a cat climbs over the fence, and Honeybun chases her out of her yard. That is really fun. But, most of the time, she gets pretty lonely for her masters.

One day, while home alone, Honeybun heard a dog barking outside the fence. She jumped up on the gate so she could look through it. Evidently, someone had forgotten to lock the gate, and when she jumped up, the gate flew open. Honeybun stood and stared for a moment, not knowing what to do. Then, she heard the dog bark again. Being curious, as dogs usually are, Honeybun darted out the gate and into the yard. She saw a beautiful black curly dog. The dog walked right up to her and rubbed her nose and suddenly ran away.

Honeybun chased the black curly dog, and they played and played, running in and out of other yards on the street. Honeybun thought what a beautiful dog he was and decided to follow to see where he went. As the dog ran, Honeybun followed. They went down one street and up another, down another, and then another. Before long, the black dog was way ahead of Honeybun, and she stopped. She decided to turn around and go back home. She wandered down the street, then up another, and another. Suddenly, Honeybun realized she was totally lost. She could not see her home anywhere. What could she do?

Honeybun could not see anything that looked familiar to her. She saw a boy and a girl walking home from school. She ran up to them and barked. They knelt down to pet her. Honeybun rolled on her back for them to rub her tummy. She licked them and jumped up for them to continue petting her, but they ignored her and continued on up the street. She wanted to say, "Please help me find my home," but did not know how to tell them. She followed them for a while and turned and barked for them to follow her, but they were soon gone, and again, Honeybun was all alone.

As Honeybun wandered from street to street, she saw two boys on bicycles. She ran along between bicycles barking and barking, hoping they would stop and play with her or help her find her way home. One of the boys kicked at her, but she thought he was playing, so she continued to bark and run beside his bicycle. But the boys did not understand. They stopped, got off their bikes, and threw rocks at Honeybun until she ran away.

Before long, it started to get dark. Honeybun really wished for her food bowl and her bed. She wandered and wandered but still could not see anything familiar. Suddenly, she heard a noise that sounded familiar. She heard, "Honeybun! Honeybun!" She turned toward the sound and saw Craig, Brad, and Chad running toward her. She was so happy. She ran to them as fast as she could and jumped and licked them all over. When they said, "Come on," she gladly followed them. She was never so glad to see her gate, her backyard, her dish full of food, and her bed.

Honeybun decided it was so good to be home that she did not really mind being lonely. She just looked forward to seeing her family every day after school and after work. But these days, Honeybun felt different. It just seemed like she really had something special to look forward to.
