Overview

Every parent who homeschools their child should read this book. The author shares with parent educators what she has learned from her 25 plus years of experience as a teacher and trainer of teachers. "We must balance what we teach with how children learn." Recent research on how the brain works has given us great insight into how children actually learn. It's not enough to simply pick a good curriculum or write great lesson plans. Much of the information shared in this book is information that most parent educators and traditional classroom teachers do not know. In part due to the fact that many educators perceive brain research to be "over their head" and the fact that neuroscience, psychology and education research is constantly uncovering information about how we learn. Thanks to technology, we are now able to study the human brain and "to boldly go where no man has ever gone before." (Star Trek) Each chapter shares information on research findings and examines the implications of these findings on teaching children from a homeschool perspective. Chapters on how the brain learns reading and how the brain learns math are included, because these are two core content areas. There is also a chapter that lists credible online resources about the topic of brain-based learning and helpful instructional resources. Two math templates are also provided, which can be duplicated for personal use.
