Jacob Abbott (November 14, 1803 – October 31, 1879) was an American writer, born in Hallowell, Maine. He was a prolific author, writing juvenile fiction, brief histories, biographies, religious books for the general reader, and a few works in popular science.

Hannibal , from Abbott’s Makers of History series, is a brief, illustrated history on the life of the Carthaginian general. Hannibal includes chapters on the Punic Wars, Scipio Africanus, and the razing of Carthage.
