Her husband is too old, however, to get her with child, and so the ambitious Imogen turns to her husband’s more virile and handsome son, the crown prince. When they were done eating, they moved to her salon, leaving the mess of platters behind them by tacit agreement. She made it a point to close the door behind them and John didn't miss the gesture.

"What do you mean?"
"If the King finds out about this, he'll have somebody's head, either yours or mine."
"What do you think is happening?"
He gave her an exasperated look. "Don't do that. We don't have enough time. I've noticed the way you've looked at me, Imogen." That was the first time he ever addressed her by name, and she liked the sound of it. Loved the way it rolled off his tongue. "Because I've been looking at you, too. I've just been waiting for you to do something about it."
