James Cheevers is the Associate Director and Senior Curator, U.S. Naval Academy Museum, where he has been employed for the past 40 years. A native of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, he attended the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1963 with a degree in history. Following service in the U.S. armed forces, Jim transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, becoming Senior Curator in 1971 and Associate Director in 1982. He helps to manage an extensive collection of art and artifacts related to the history of the U.S. Navy with an emphasis on the officer corps and the history of the Naval Academy and its alumni, having added thousands of items to the collection and developed numerous exhibitions.
He is a member of a number of professional organizations and has served on advisory boards for Historic Annapolis, and as volunteer Executive Secretary, Historic Naval Ships Association since 1985. Jim is also an active member of the U.S. Naval Academy Speakers Bureau. He is a very active volunteer in the Annapolis community, serving on the boards and as an officer of organizations as diverse as the American Legion, the Maryland Ornithological Society, and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra.
