About the Author

William E. Hardy is a doctoral student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received both his bachelor of arts and his master of arts degree in history from the University of Louisville in 2001 and 2004. William has published several articles in journals such as Civil War History, Tennessee Historical Quarterly, and the Journal of East Tennessee History. His primary research interest is nineteenth-century U.S. History with a focus on the Civil War and Reconstruction era.
In addition to his doctoral studies, William is employed full-time by the East Tennessee Historical Society where he is the Grant Manager of "America's Republic," a three-year federal grant funded by the United States Department of Education.
William and his wife, Heather, live in West Knoxville.
