About the Author

Scott M. Bushnell is a former reporter and editor for newspapers in New York State and Connecticut and for the Associated Press. He later worked in corporate communications for two Fortune 500 companies. A graduate of Dutchess Community College in his hometown of Poughkeepsie, New York, and Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne, he served as copy editor of the narrative history History of Fort Wayne and Allen County, 1700–2005. Bushnell is the author of Hard News, Heartfelt Opinions: The History of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and co-author of Roanoke: The Renaissance of a Hoosier Village. He and his wife, Barbara, live in rural northeast Indiana.

Historic Photos of Fort Wayne is a well-crafted, simple collection of pictures taken of Fort Wayne up to the nineteen eighties. Well the pictures tell their own stories, the captions detail the people and significance of the scene. Interestingly, the author notes the Germanic founding of Fort Wayne and the later toned-down German influences that were a distraction during the onset of WWI. I have read Fort Wayne history and being a native of Fort Wayne, I was surprised to learn even more with this book. Since it is a fast read, while interesting, I would recommend this book for any Fort Wayne native. People liking historic photos could also benefit from this neat and clever book. While it was near me, family read it and had much the same praises as do I for this book. While I normally harshly criticize many books and focus on the negative, I will endorse this one. Good viewing, good reading.

Fort Wayne has a beautiful history, and local author Scott M. Bushnell provides the evidence to prove it. In his newest book, "Historic Photos of Fort Wayne," the black-and-white photos range from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century. From horse-drawn carriages to architecture, it provides a window into the old Summit City. Readers will have the opportunity to meet the man behind the collection when Bushnell signs copies of his book at several bookstores. Several photos show some of the city's most famous events, such as the passage of the Liberty Bell through its streets. Bushnell chose the photos carefully, setting out to find those that could "tell a story in and of themselves." "I have wanted to do a photo book of Fort Wayne for several years, and this was a great opportunity," Bushnell said. The majority of the photos were collected from the public domain, but several needed to be tracked down. With the help of the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society, Bushnell dug deep into the past, finding "images not seen before." Bushnell is no newcomer to producing historical books. He's already written and worked on several books focusing on northeastern Indiana, including "Hard News, Heartfelt Opinions: The History of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette" and "Roanoke: The Renaissance of a Hoosier Village." Of his new book, Bushnell said, "I hope it helps people recognize that Fort Wayne has a dynamic history, one that we can draw upon as we try to solve the problems of today and tomorrow."

The dust jacket of "Historic Photos of Fort Wayne" displays a picture taken during author Scott Bushnell's favorite period from the city's past.

That would be the era stretching from 1880 to 1920, Bushnell said during a book signing last month at Mitchell Books in Covington Plaza. It was "an industrial era, and we were the social and commercial center for everything," he said.

Bushnell wrote the text and captions for the book published by Nashville-based Turner Publishing Co. "Historic Photos of Fort Wayne" is a 200-page collection of black-and-white photos intended for an audience of readers that loves the city, selected by one of its biggest fans.
