I shoved the binder under a cushion before getting to my feet. “Mr. Ferdinand.”
His expression was unreadable. “You couldn’t sleep?”
“No. You?”
“I always rise early for a few hours’ work.” He approached me, and my heart leapt into my throat. “However, that would be difficult – ” he leaned to retrieve the binder between the couch cushions where I’d shoved it “ – if my work had been pilfered.”
I couldn’t breathe. I flushed hard, wishing he’d yell, wishing he’d just fire me rather than maintain this cool composure. “I’m so sorry.”
He shook his head. “If you’d like to read it, then you’ll read it,” he said, handing it back to me. My eyebrows shot up until he continued, “On two conditions.”
“Sir?” I stood stock still, cradling the binder, as he paced through the study.
“You’ll read it out loud,” he said.
