Maher and Speer, founders of the online women’s ministry Her True Worth, compile “tips and tactics to guide you back to God” in their compassionate debut. Using personal reflections and biblical analysis, the authors encourage women to forge a sense of identity and self-worth grounded in Christ. Maher and Speer warn against “affirmation addiction,” which happens when one’s desire for praise becomes so extreme it resembles Satan’s pridefulness, and they urge readers to counter it by emulating Jesus’s assuredness in the face of constant rejection. One should look to God in trying times, the authors contend, discussing how Job remained steadfast in his faith after Satan inflicted severe losses on him: “Even when the sky is falling and our world is falling apart, who we are in Christ remains the same.” The authors’ empathy is palpable, and they are refreshingly candid in admitting their struggles to live by their own advice, such as when Speer asks readers if they have changed themselves to win others’ approval and responds, “This is where I slowly raise my hand and admit, I have.” This kindhearted volume has a lot to offer.
