Overview

Henry, a little warthog in Africa, looks different from his friends because he was born with a big smile. His warthog friends make fun of his looks, and refuse to play with him. His only friends are 3 bird brothers. Henry makes up songs to feel better. When a hungry hyena comes along, threatening to eat Henry for his dinner, frightened Henry sings him a song to scare him away. The confused hyena who has never heard a singing warthog, thinks he'd better leave Henry alone, so goes away to find something else to eat. All Henry's warthog friends realize he's saved them, and they decide they should be nice to him. They ask him to make up a new song, and after he sings it, they all go off together to play in their favorite mud hole. This book is about friendship and acceptance; especially for those who might at first seem different.

About the Author

Carol Herman has enjoyed two careers. As a classical musician—cello and viola da gamba
(Google it!) she performed, toured, and taught in the USA and abroad. However, her
childhood desire to be an actor finally won over, and with a “now or never” decision she
plunged into life in front of the camera. Her longtime writing passion, resulting in monologues,
light verse, and sonnets, now includes kids’ stories. People occasionally hear Carol muttering in
iambic pentameter, while scraps of paper with couplets or plot ideas litter her house.

For years Carol enjoyed a studio apartment in Hollywood and read weekly to K and 1 kids at a
nearby school. The pandemic ended this delightful arrangement, but her regrets were
mitigated when she met a new young friend eager for bedtime stories. What an opportunity to
write for “the smalls!” Each story includes, as does Henry The Smiling Warthog, several short
poems as well as a “lesson” or moral. Carol continues to jot down ideas and rhymes for more
adventures with Henry. Meanwhile, Gigi and Zeva’s Excellent Idea, a story of young giraffe and
zebra friends menaced by a scary crocodile, is currently being illustrated by her fabulous
illustrator. Of course, the book will have poems and a moral!
