Henry Joel Cadbury was one of the most respected and beloved Quakers of the twentieth century. His accomplishments and commitments reached into many worlds. He was widely acknowledged as an author and as a biblical scholar and translator of the highest order; a professor who challenged students' thinking in the halls of Harvard Divinity School, Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges and Pendle Hill; and the consummate Quaker activist. A strong and steady voice for peace and racial justice, he lived his faith through social action. For Henry Cadbury, that activism was expressed principally through the American Friends Service Committee, of which he was a founder and long-time board chair.
