Overview

In January, there's a lot of snow on the ground. One day when Henry and his big dog Mudge go outside to play, they see a sign in a store window. It says: SNOWMAN CONTEST, SATURDAY AT THE PARK. Henry runs home to tell his dad. On Saturday, the park is filled with people building all kinds of fancy snowmen. There are many dogs there, too. While Mudge makes friends, Henry and his dad get to work. They will need to make a very unusual snowman to win this contest! Listeners of all ages love the Henry and Mudge series. Each adventure of the young boy and his enormous dog is one that teaches happy lessons about friendship and sharing. Audie Award-winning narrator George Guidall says these are some of his favorite books to read.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3-This charming adventure is the 19th installment of the classic beginning-to-read series by Cynthia Rylant (S&S, 1999). Henry and his Dad, and his big dog Mudge, enter a snowman contest in the park. The topic, pace, and humorous conclusion of this high-interest tale will satisfy readers and listeners alike. The female narrator speaks slowly and clearly, making it easy for beginning readers to follow along. The narration is supported by wintry-sounding music and appropriately subtle sound effects. Using the book and tape together promotes independent reading and is an entertaining way to improve reading skills. The ten-minute length is good for limited attention spans and provides a sense of accomplishment when completed. Youngsters will want to listen to the tape and read along again and again, each time becoming a bit more confident. This is an excellent production for pre-readers and beginning readers.-Maura Smith, Somerset Elementary School, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews "Warm, loving, and gently philosophical, these stories...deserve a place in every library collection."

JUN/JUL 02 - AudioFile

Would that all young boys could have a satisfying relationship with their fathers and a beloved pet dog--as Henry does with his dad and Mudge! In this adventure, they participate in a snow-creature contest. It’s a toss-up whether the spectacle with carrots and broccoli in the park, pets and snow, or the celebratory snowman cookies is the best part of the day. George Guidall is a relaxed narrator who sets his tempo by the activity and excitement level of each chapter. His enjoyment for the simple pleasures of Henry, his dad, and Mudge sparkles through the snowy day. A.R. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
