Overview

When Henry and his big dog Mudge see a spy kit for sale, they know right away that it's time to break open the piggy bank. With their spy hat and magnifying glass and secret code card, Henry and Mudge can flirt with danger, steal secrets, and start cracking codes. On their first spy mission, Henry tells Mudge to try not to look suspicious. Mudge rolls in the mud and chews on an old shoe, so no one will ever think he's a spy. But then Henry finds a piece of paper with a real spy code written on it. Can the two sneaky spies figure out who is leaving them messages? Cynthia Rylant's popular stories about a boy and his enormous best friend delight young readers and their parents with their fun-filled adventures. George Guidall's energetic reading of this frisky tale will leave listeners howling.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2--In this latest installment about a boy and his oversized pup, Henry empties his piggy bank and buys a spy kit. He wears the dark glasses himself and puts the hat on Mudge. While spying around the neighborhood, they discover a paper with a coded message near some trash cans. Henry takes it home, thinks about it for a bit, decodes it, and then sends a return message. After several exchanges, Henry and Mudge meet the other spy who also has a dog in disguise. Calling themselves "Crackers" for being good at cracking codes, the boys form a club and carry real crackers in their pockets for ID. Rylant tells the story in a concise format while maintaining a sense of humor and flow of words. The combination of the text and Stevenson's colorful, expressive illustrations makes this book more than just a beginning reader--preschoolers will welcome this duo into storyhour programs.-Nancy A. FEB/MAR 02 - AudioFile

Almost all kids love stories about dogs, and the Henry and Mudge series epitomizes most kid’s fantasies about the perfect boy/dog relationship--they are wonderful friends, they understand each other, and they complement each other in all their adventures. In this story, Henry buys a spy kit, and he and Mudge learn how to be spies. Narrator George Guidall creates a young, enthusiastic voice for Henry, and a large, ponderous, slow voice for Mudge. Guidall reads this fun-filled adventure with humor, and maintains the same vocal inflections to create patterns and repetition, which in turn invite young listeners to participate. A great selection from this well-loved series for beginning readers. W.L.S. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
