Description: This review of treatments for hematologic and oncologic diseases navigates the various stages of each malignant process with clarity and conciseness yet completeness. While it does not feature illustrations, its format suits the purpose as an accessible, navigable resource for those caring for patients carrying a malignant diagnosis. The format is very logical. The inclusion of epidemiology, work-up, and a summary of "expert opinion" was nicely done and is uniquely presented. The second edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose of this review is to provide a singular source for providers who care for patients with cancer where they can quickly learn or review the approved therapies of each disease state. The objective is worthy as the field is rapidly changing. Frequent modifications are likely to be needed, which will be possible through updates to the available online version. However, my concern with the print volume is that it will become quickly outdated.
Audience: This book is written for specialists who practice in hematology/oncology. The author states it is for "all practitioners involved in the care of patients with cancer...". It may be beyond the scope of practice for many such as PCPs. The authors are extremely credible and are considered experts in their field.
Features: The book focuses in depth on each malignant process, briefly touching on its epidemiology, staging, and work-up before taking a thorough dive into the approved/recommended treatment options for each stage. The pertinent references are provided. With each treatment option, the regimen is discussed with anticipated and less common side effects. This information is presented in a tabular format with no illustrations.
Assessment: This is an extremely relevant and high-quality reference for those in the field of hematology/oncology. The field is rapidly changing, making this third edition a necessity. Because it is rapidly changing, an online resource to use together with this print volume is necessary.
