Overview

Helping Grandpa Hues is a school-age children book, demonstrating different ways to enhance and contribute to the well-being of the older adult with Alzheimer’s disease. The main character in the book is Ethan Daye, a sixth grade boy who is portrayed as a helpful grandson to his grandpa Hues. In the story, Ethan gradually becomes aware of grandpa’s unusual behaviors. Ethan notices the changes in grandpa Hues, and voices his concerns to his parents. Ethan decides to share his experiences with his teachers through a journal-writing assignment for his class. Ethan’s mom and dad serve as role models for Ethan to calmly understand grandpa Hues’ condition with AD. Ethan’s parents openly educate Ethan about AD, so that he has a better understanding of grandpa’s behaviors. He is encouraged to participate with family activities, and to provide support for grandpa Hues. Ethan expresses his devotion for his grandpa and does his best to make sure his grandpa is happy.
