About the Author

duopress labs is the creative team, led by Mauricio Velázquez de León, responsible for writing and developing dozens of books and games. Mauricio has written for Lonely Planet, Chouette, PowerKids Press, and the magazines Gourmet and Saveur. He resides wherever he can find a good wi-fi connection and strong coffee, mostly in the eastern United States.

Violet Lemay is an award‑winning author and illustrator whose children’s books include 100 Pablo Picassos, My Foodie ABC, Artists and Their Pets, and the Local Baby series, which includes New York Baby and Beach Babies. Violet worked as a professor of illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. Violet’s illustrations have been published by Penguin, Holt, HarperCollins, McGraw-Hill, Scholastic, and Highlights magazine. Violet currently lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

Readers meet (and greet) 10 aquatic animals including a starfish, crab, jellyfish, and shark in this lighthearted board book. Set against black backdrops, Lemay’s sea creatures have rough, chunky features reminiscent of linoleum prints, while black-and-white patterns of dots, squares, and other shapes on the left-hand pages provide additional high-contrast imagery to catch babies’ attention. The varied greetings range from polite (“Good to see you, dolphin”) to folksy (“What’s up, turtle?”), with Spanish and Hawaiian hellos in the mix, as well. A closing emoticon offers an irreverent reminder that some greetings don’t even require words. Up to age 4. (May)
