Hear We Gullah Geechee
A celebration of the sounds of the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor.

Hear We Gullah Geechee invites babies and toddlers to discover Gullah culture. Written with rhythm and repetition to engage young readers, this book invites us to hear the world from the perspective of a young boy in the low country region of South Carolina. As he spends time in his community, he hears the beat beat b-beat of traditional drumming, the tip tip plop of trimming beans, the ti-ti ti-ti of fiddler crabs—and other sounds that evoke the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor.

This is one of five books in the Gullah Geechee Heritage series, highlighting the culture and traditions of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Each book focuses on one of the five senses—this one, hearing.

Hear We Gullah Geechee:

  • Shows Gullah Geechee history and contemporary culture
  • Focuses on the sense of hearing—other books in the series focus on other senses
  • Emphasizes family, community, and place through illustrations
  • Rhythmic writing and lots of onomatopoeia make this a fun and engaging read-aloud with young children
  • Includes a section for adults with additional background information

Whether babies and toddlers see themselves reflected in this book or gain an early appreciation for cultures other than their own, Hear We Gullah Geechee invites them to explore their own world through sound and celebration.
