Why do I work the way I do?

If you are asking this question, Healthy Ways to Work in Health Care will guide you to the answer. Healthy Ways to Work in Health Care identifies three unhealthy work behaviors—work fixation, work addiction, and work exhaustion— and offers tips to transform your work into a balanced, healthy, and meaningful expression of your life.

The goal of this book is to help health care providers be faithful to themselves as they care for others. It is about remembering the delicate task of nurturing the inward lives of dedicated and engaged caregivers. It is written for those who feel the need to reflect and think about themselves while also being present to care for others. This book will appeal to health care professionals who understand the importance of presence and are ready to ask themselves these questions: Is this what I want to do? Am I caring for myself? What is it that is asked of me at this time in my life?

An organization's cultural shift to support improved patient care, greater patient satisfaction, and high functioning teams begins one employee at a time. Healthy Ways to Work in Health Care is a tool for individuals and teams to improve patient care and employee and patient satisfaction.

About the Author

Dr. Martin C. Helldorfer writes from a unique perspective. After spending 30 years as a De La Salle Brother, a life that gave him selfless discipline and the deep conviction that we are put on this earth to help others, he left his life as a monk and has been married for over two decades. When he re-emerged into the world, he studied psychology and put his knowledge to work in private practice for over 20 years. During that time, he was also the director of outpatient care and the resident psychologist at a prominent residential treatment center.

As a practicing psychologist, Dr. Helldorfer understood what is at the core of the experiences of people in the medical field, those who give so much to others. His unique combination of psychological and theological education and perspective led him to take everyday life experiences, recognize the sacred in them, and highlight the value of the individual as well as a team. His books are a compilation of the gems of truth he gleans from those ordinary experiences, broadened into universal principles that readers can apply to their own lives.

Dr. Helldorfer retired from Exempla Healthcare, a Colorado-based regional healthcare system, where he held the position of Senior Vice President for Mission. Prior to joining Exempla, he served in similar positions in other regional and national healthcare systems. He knows healthcare organizations from the inside, and his experience on non-profit boards and his many years of working with employees within hospitals, clinics and outpatient settings is extensive.

Healing with Heart: Inspirations for Healthcare Professionals won the American Journal of Nursing’s Book of the Year Award in 2008 and is in its sixth printing. Countless health care organizations and health care professionals are using Healing with Heart to transform and support a culture of compassionate care. Prayer: A Relationship Without Words, is beautifully printed in full color throughout, and is providing comfort to caregivers, families and patients who are in crisis. Dr. Helldorfer’s latest book, Healthy Ways to Work in Health Care: A Self Care Guide is proving to be a welcome addition to the personal and professional tool kits of health care professionals who are seeking ways to find and enrich their work lives.

Dr. Helldorfer holds a Doctorate in Ministry (psych) from Andover Newton Theological, and Masters Degrees in chemistry (Notre Dame University.
