Promoting the health literacy of patients across all settings is an essential component of prevention, wellness, and effective medical treatment. Purpose: The title suggests that readers will learn about health literacy in nursing practice within a person-centered care paradigm. The book makes inferences to this paradigm throughout. The notion of person-centeredness could be more explicitly discussed.
Audience: The intended audience is nurses, both new graduates and experienced practitioners. The book is also appropriate for nursing students in associate degree, baccalaureate, and graduate nursing programs. However, the book has benefits for anyone in the health professions and it meets the needs of its audience. The author has spent numerous years specializing in health literacy and is the principal and founder of Health Literacy Partners, LLC.
Features: The book provides a broad understanding of the state of the art in health literacy research, theory, and practice. It provides in-depth coverage of health literacy conceptually and from a practice perspective. For example, the author provides excellent information regarding the history of health literacy, numerous definitions of health literacy, and misconceptions related to it. A discussion of additional special populations would add value to the book. Useful features include tables, figures, and bulleted lists. The chapters are dense without being overwhelming or lengthy, which makes it easy to read and achieve its purpose.
Assessment: This book has a substantive research and theoretical base, but does not leave out important practical applications. It is highly useful to health professionals for improving their health literacy knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
