About the Author

Margaret P. Moss, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN, is a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota. She is currently director of the University of British Columbia’s First Nations House of Learning and a tenured associate professor in the Faculty of Applied Science-Nursing.

Janice M. Phillips, PhD, RN, CENP, FAAN, is the director of Nursing Research and Health Equity at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and an associate professor at the Rush University College of Nursing.

Description: This book addresses health equity while stressing the important role nurses play in achieving equity. Concepts of population health and interprofessional teamwork are interwoven throughout. The use of key content, chapter objectives, critical thinking or discussion questions, along with extra resources and online content contribute to the book's success as a teaching tool.
Purpose: The major purpose is to describe the critical role nurses play in health equity. It also examines the factors impacting equity in the US and posits future directions for nursing practice, research, and policy. These are worthy objectives, which are met and enhanced by additional supportive material found online.
Audience: The primary audience is doctor of nursing practice (DNP) students according to the authors. According to the reviewer, nurses interested in leadership and policy will also find the book useful. The book meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors and contributors are nationally and internationally recognized experts according to their experience and credentials.
Features: The book covers typical health equity topics such as definitions, forces impacting equity, and social determinants of health. Discussion regarding evidence-based policy making, use of population health, and exemplars such as the American Indian experience highlight nursing's role in health equity in a unique way. The last section illustrates how interprofessional collaboration can influence equity-global partnerships, intersections with law, health literacy, racism, and community health centers.
Assessment: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Strategies for Facilitating Conversations on Race, Hollins and Govan (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015) only addresses a narrow focus on equity. Other books examine community action, such as Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity, Weinstein et al. (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2017). No other book brings nursing's role to the forefront of this dialogue.
