As adults, they were better known as Harriet Beecher Stowe, the famous author of Uncle Tom's Cabin--the book that catapaulted the nation into Civil War, and Henry Ward Beecher, the famous younger brother who became a much loved minister who preached against slavery and held mock slave auctions from his pulpit in Brooklyn, New York. Together they traveled through some of the most important historical movements in our country. But, in the beginning, they were just Hattie and Henry, born in the northwest hills of Southern New England and sheltered from the harsh realities of slavery.
