Kids who have ever dealt with a never-ending stream of hiccups will empathize with Harry's story—and will likely want to suggest techniques of their own.

School Library Journal

04/01/2018
PreS-Gr 1—When Harry gets the hiccups, he has a hard time getting rid of them. The boy gets advice from friends, family, and neighbors in his apartment building on how to cure his hiccups, from drinking water upside down to holding his breath, but to no avail. Finally, his mother suggests that he go outside, claiming that fresh air may help to get rid of them. Outside, he goes by a stream near his apartment building and is startled by a jumping frog, which cures him of his hiccups. Harry thanks the frog for helping, but now the frog is the one with the hiccups. Little's story is a silly, but serviceable depiction of hiccups for young children and the various methods people use to get over them. Young readers will likely enjoy the humorous lengths Harry will go to try to lose his hiccups. Weissman's illustrations, created using acrylic on board, are detailed and vibrant, and the depictions of the frog, particularly after he has gotten the hiccups, are amusing. VERDICT An additional selection for larger library collections that is suitable for storytime or small group sharing.—Laura J. Giunta, Garden City Public Library, NY
