Description: This is an update of a book that covers a wide array of vascular disease processes and their current management. Each of the chapters does a good job of addressing the basic foundation of a topic and then expanding on the management through evidence-based practices. The accompanying website recreates the print copy in an electronic format that is easy to navigate. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The purpose of this edition is to update the current state of vascular disease. Specifically, the authors note how cardiovascular disease is more common than when the previous edition was published 10 years ago. Along with the evolution of patient management with new research, this edition succinctly discusses the role of new research in vascular surgery. Having the online version in addition to the print version makes it easier to browse through chapters and look at charts and images. I prefer the online version because it is easy to access it anywhere and I prefer to take notes online. Both the book and website meet the objectives; this edition organizes different disease processes in a way that makes it easy to read about the pathogenesis, clinical significance, and current care in the same short chapter.
Audience: The audience includes any healthcare professionals, from medical students to physicians, who are interested in vascular surgery care. The book presents high-yield, yet abbreviated versions of many vascular surgery topics, which makes it useful for quick reading. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are vascular surgeons who have published on various topics in the vascular surgery research community.
Features: The title makes it clear that the book specifically covers the medical management of vascular diseases. The book does a great job at compartmentalizing vascular diseases in an organized fashion. I appreciate the flow of the book, which starts with a strong foundation in arterial and venous diseases, followed by general examinations for these diseases, and ending with disease-specific topics. Each chapter does a good job emphasizing key points by using illustrations appropriately. When appropriate, the book lists certain topics to make it easier to read and understand. The artwork is well done, but given the importance of vessel anatomy with pathology and the different surgical maneuvers, the book could have had more illustrations showing various anatomy variants with and without certain pathologies.
Assessment: There is a limited number of reference books in vascular surgery, and most are large and extremely detailed (Rutherford's Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, 9th edition, Sidawy et al. (Elsevier, 2019), and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery: A Comprehensive Review, 9th edition, Moore et al. (Elsevier, 2019)). This is the most condensed version of a book on vascular disease that still is informative for healthcare professionals while being easy to read. This new edition is justified because it presents the latest in vascular disease management based on the evidence.
