Description:Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are complex, lifelong disorders that require the coordinated attention of a team of professionals. In this comprehensive handbook designed to fit in the coat pocket, experts from diverse fields and institutions combine state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Purpose:This is intended as a practical guide to managing IBD, using evidence-based medicine and incorporating the art of choosing various medical and surgical options. These complex disorders are often difficult and confusing to manage and the authors certainly provide a practical understanding of the challenges.
Audience:The authors aim the book at medical and surgical trainees as well as practicing physicians. I see it easily fitting in the coat pocket of gastroenterology fellows in training as well as practicing gastroenterologists who care for a high volume of IBD patients. It is small enough to compete comfortably for space with other pocket guides that address different GI conditions. The authors are predominantly from the eastern part of the United States and their views reflect a U.S.-centric treatment approach.
Features:A comprehensive treatment approach to IBD is covered in 20 short chapters (the book, including index, totals 177 pages). I particularly appreciated the chapters on the all-important first visit, useful approaches to intestinal stomas, nursing considerations for patients with IBD as well as nutrition in inflammatory bowel disease (although the latter inadequately addresses the vexing question of the importance and/or treatment of vitamin D deficiency in IBD). Other useful unique chapters examine women's health and IBD, and IBD and the workplace and disability issues. The chapters generally are easy to read and digest.
Assessment:This is an excellent addition to the profusion of handbooks that compete for room in our coat pockets. It adds value in focusing on a single important but complex field that requires multidisciplinary (medical, surgical, nursing, psychological, dietary) input for ultimate successful management. The information is current and its utility in my daily practice ensures a spot in my pocket.
