Overview

Hamlet, hijo del difunto rey de Dinamarca, se siente melancólico y abatido por las cosas del mundo. Su madre se ha casado con Claudio (el hermano de su padre), el nuevo rey, y Hamlet deambula por el palacio lleno de sospechas y dudas. Dos meses después de la muerte de su padre, Hamlet es visitado por el fantasma de su padre y le informa que ha sido asesinado por Claudio para llegar a ser rey y casarse con su madre. A Hamlet le corresponde la venganza del asesinato, pero se angustia entre la acción y la duda y busca excusas para posponer la venganza. Se finge loco para que la gente no sospeche de lo que trama en secreto. Polonio, el chambelán de la corte, cree que la locura de Hamlet se debe a la prohibición de que cortejase a su hija Ofelia. Hamlet aprovecha la visita de una compañía de actores a la corte para descubrir si el mensaje del fantasma es verdadero. Se reproduce en escena el asesinato de su padre y estudia las reacciones del rey Claudio. Hamlet se convence de que el fantasma ha dicho la verdad. Claudio advierte que su crimen ha sido descubierto y planifica una misión diplomática para enviar a Hamlet a Inglaterra. Hamlet censura a su madre, Gertrudis, y durante la conversación, al ponerse en evidencia un espía con una certera estocada, Hamlet mata a Polonio que estaba escondido tras unos cortinajes. El rey teme por su vida y envía a Hamlet a Inglaterra acompañado de dos mercenarios que llevan encargo de convencer al rey de Inglaterra para que ejecute al príncipe. Hamlet se entera de la misión cambia la orden, reemplazándola por la muerte de los dos portadores. Hamlet cae prisionero de un pirata, pero es devuelto por ellos mismos a Dinamarca. Regresa a tiempo para presenciar el funeral de Ofelia, que se había ahogado. Laertes hijo de Polonio, le acusa a Hamlet de la muerte de su padre y hermana. Laertes y Claudio decide matar a Hamlet y preparan un duelo. El plan consiste en envenenar una de las espadas y tener un copa de vino envenenado para el caso de que 1a espada falle. En el duelo, Laertes hiere a Hamlet. La reina, Gertrudis, toma por equivocación el vino envenenado. Los duelistas intercambian las espadas. En su agonía, Laertes revela la traición del rey. En un arranque de cólera, Hamlet arremete con la espada envenenada contra Claudio y mata al rey. Hamlet ruega a su amigo Horacio que cuente la verdadera historia de su tragedia al mundo. Hamlet señala a Fortinbrás como el soldado más apto para ascender al trono.

About the Author

Malini Roy works as a freelance researcher and writer in Frankfurt, Germany. She would love to be able to create graphic novels. But a chronic inability to shape any form of visual art, other than that allowed by a blob of plasticine, has left her thrashing in the nether regions of writing and adapting scripts, such as a creative sequel to a short story by Bengali author Rabindranath Tagore (forthcoming, HarperCollins India, 2016). Time and again she bugs comics artists in order to produce the odd academic article, published in essay collections such as Textual Transformations in Children's Literature (ed. Lefebvre, Routledge, 2013).

A resident of New Delhi, India, Naresh Kumar describes himself as a seeker who is continuously trying to learn as much as he can, and his art is an expression of his curiosity towards the world. A firm believer in humanity, Naresh brings an experienced hand to the drawing board, and his photo-realistic style captures the subtle emotions of his characters. His work features in a number of titles from Campfire, which include World War Two, Genesis, Julius Caesar, Martin Luther King Jr., and Sinbad.

For individual plays, these editions are appealing in their presentation of easy-to-read text with footnotes on alternate pages, next to the text, instead of buried in small print at the bottom of every page. The notes are precise and often feature contemporary illustrations. Supplemental essays convey modern perspectives on the plays, which are likely to be of interest to students.

The timeless tale of the young and disaffected Danish prince who is pushed to avenge his father's untimely murder at the hands of his brother unfolds with straightforward briskness. Shakespeare's text has been liberally but judiciously cut, staying true to the thematic meaning while dispensing with longer speeches (with the notable exception of the renowned "to be or not to be" soliloquy) and intermediary dialogues. Some of the more obscure language has been modernized, with a glossary of terms provided at the end; despite these efforts, readers wholly unfamiliar with the story might struggle with independent interpretation. Where this adaptation mainly excels is in its art, especially as the play builds to its tensely wrought final act. Illustrator Kumar (World War Two, 2015, etc.) pairs richly detailed interiors and exteriors with painstakingly rendered characters, each easily distinguished from their fellows through costume, hairstyle, and bearing. Human figures are generally depicted in bust or three-quarter shots, making the larger panels of full figures all the more striking. Heavily scored lines of ink form shadows, lending the otherwise bright pages a gritty air. All characters are white.
