CHAPTER 1

Hamilton Emerson Monroe smoothed out the last wrinkle to his freshly made bed. He gazed out the window and noticed that more leaves had changed color. He watched as a newly orange leaf slowly fell from the big oak tree. "Oh no, cold weather can only be around the corner!" Suddenly, a feeling of dread came over Hamilton. He knew that coats, scarfs, and winter were on the way and he suddenly felt quiet sad.

Hamilton fed his pet goldfish, Leo, and whispered, "What if I am never happy again?" He sighed and headed for the kitchen.

After gulping down his breakfast, he quietly asked his mom, "Are you always happy?"

She took a long moment and joked, "Honey, I am happy when my son is not late for school," she laughed a little louder, "now get going."

As his mom kissed him on the forehead, she gently guided him to the door.

Hamilton gave her a big hug and said, "Today, I've decided to go on a special expedition."

At Belmont Avenue, Hamilton Monroe met the crossing guard, Miss Loretta.

"Ma'am," he asked, "can you tell me about happiness?"

Immediately she became passionate, "Now that is a very good question Hamilton."

"It makes me glad when children practice correct Safety Road Rules," and she carried on quiet seriously when she said, "Hamilton, before crossing any road, remember to stop, think, look and listen." She demonstrated, "Always look left, right, left and towards the front and behind you at every intersection."

As she gave a quick wink and a wave Miss Loretta warmly explained, "That way you will see all oncoming traffic to keep yourself safe and that makes me happy!"

Hamilton's next stop was Gordon Elementary. He saw some girls from class in front of the bulletin board talking happily about writer coming and their new coats. Trying to ignore them, he walked into his classroom ready to continue his investigation.
