Overview

Jean, the youngest of a gang of friends in snowy Peabody Wisconsin, is sucked into trouble when her older brother and sister form "The Hall of Heroes." They appoint a membership (and Jean is last),and use a metal garden shed as their rendezvous point.

From the start, Eddy Reinbach and his two cronies hound the "Heroes" and interrupt their meetings with insults and snowball fights. War ensues, and the bullies win victory after victory. Can our Heroes survive?

But Jean discovers a tragic secret in the big dark huse at the end of the street. She realizes that it is time to be a real hero. Her brother's friend Digger comes to her aid, and a new Hall of Heroes is formed

This thinly disguised Peabody Series book (aka Derwood Inc.) takes readers on a familiar, fast-paced romp filled with bullies, dark basements, lonely houses, and a reclusive spinster. But the adventure in this story has darker hints than is typical of its predecessors. With a gentle touch, Massi introduces juvenile readers to the concepts of death and separation as a part of the Christian life. The somber notes of the story are offset by some of the best slapstick comedy she has yet written.
