He played 18 times for England, captained Sussex and represented Middlesex, who he also coached before turning to umpiring in 2003. Within three years he was on the ICC's elite panel and in a 13-year career at the top his relationships with some of the biggest names in cricket quickly established him one of the world's most highly respected umpires.
