Overview

A Celebration of the Colors of the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor

Gullah Geechee Color Wheel invites babies and toddlers to discover the Gullah culture. Written with rhythm and repetition to engage young readers, this book invites us to see the world through the eyes of a young girl in Charleston, South Carolina. As she spends time with her mother and extended family, she notices the red bricks of old buildings, the Haint blue paint of Southern porches, the bright orange of fresh-cooked crabs—and other colors that evoke the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor.

This is one of five books in the Gullah Geechee Heritage series, highlighting the culture and traditions of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Each book focuses on one of the five senses—this one, sight.

Gullah Geechee Color Wheel
  • Shows Gullah Geechee history and contemporary culture
  • Focuses on the sense of sight—other books in the series focus on other senses
  • Emphasizes family, community, and place through illustrations
  • Poetic, rhythmic writing makes this a fun and engaging read-aloud with young children
  • Includes a section for adults with additional background information

Whether babies and toddlers see themselves reflected in this book or gain an early appreciation for cultures other than their own, Gullah Geechee Color Wheel invites them to explore their own world through color and celebration.

Gullah Geechee Color Wheel is the winner of the 2022 Black Voices in Children’s Literature writing contest, co-sponsored by Strive Publishing and Free Spirit Publishing.
