Overview

Growth Hormone and the Heart endeavors to bring together knowledge that has been accumulated in the area of GH and the heart, from basic to clinical studies, by research groups working on this topic throughout the world. Lessons from different experimental models and from several human diseases (acromegaly, adult GH deficiency, heart failure) suggest to endocrinologists and cardiologists that GH may not only have a role in the physiology and pathophysiology of heart function, but that GH itself may have a place in the treatment of primary heart diseases (such as dilated cardiomyopathy) or of cardiac complications of hypopituitarism.
Growth Hormone and the Heart will be a useful update of the research produced in the field of cardiovascular endocrinology. The Editors also hope that this book will serve as the primary step in the recognition of the wide physiological and clinical significance of GH and heart interactions.

Description: This book has collected knowledge available on growth hormone and its influence on the heart, from basic to clinical material. It has an international set of authors and suggests a new discipline called cardiovascular endocrinology. This is the ninth in a series of Endocrinology updates.
Purpose: The purpose is to update and explore current research on the complexity of the relationship between growth hormone and insulin growth factor-1 and, perhaps stimulate more research in this area. This is a worthy objective since there is a potential for treating chronic congestive heart failure, as well as other clinical problems.
Audience: This book is intended for researchers in the area and those interested in being researchers in this area. Endocrinologists as well as cardiologists will find interesting information here. The authors are all credible and have written much of the material in original research.
Features: New information on the relationship between insulin-like growth factor and growth hormone is described. Growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 regulate cardiac growth and development. Growth hormone has an effect on contractility thought to be mediated through intracellular calcium. Growth hormone increases cardiac output, left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, and left ventricular wall mass in treated patients with growth hormone deficiency. The hormone also has an effect on plasma volume and fluid and sodium hemostasis. There is information on growth hormone deficiencies and growth hormone excess (acromegaly) as well as on growth hormone resistance in congestive heart failure, and an interesting chapter relating this to cardiac cachexia.
Assessment: This book brings together some very interesting material and suggests a future for cardiovascular endocrinology. There is much work to be done. For example, in the area of congestive heart failure, growth hormone has inconsistent effects. There is material on exercise as it relates to growth hormone, as well as obesity and anorexia and their interaction with leptin. This book is a welcome addition to this literature.
