Children's Literature Comprehensive Database

Not your everyday “visit to the grocery store” book, this title from the “Read it! Readers” series combines a fun story about helping with a creative introduction to geography, map-reading, and map-drawing—plus grocery shopping skills and a bit of math. It gives children a close-up look at the functions of reading and writing that work in the real world. Meg and Ben take Mom’s handwritten grocery list (complete with a legend that connects to a map of the grocery story) and off they go. Kids are even introduced to the idea of a map key. While reading this book, take time to explore the list, its legend, and the maps with your young reader. See if you can figure out where the strawberries are. As if that is not enough, later in the story the author cleverly draws the reader into applying what he has learned with Meg and Ben at the grocery store by directing them to find items in another store by using a store directory. Add on activities are a plus, with instructions for making a “map” of your child’s room, a list of extra books to read about shopping and mapping, and even a web site hunt through Facthound. You will find yourself hard-pressed to find a book packed with more integrated learning.
