Overview

MAVERICK: More learning, less doing. Faster.

What sets better learners apart? Find out what sets their preparation apart.

Green Mind learning is about awareness and growth, embracing all you choose to become. It's about faster, deeper learning that lasts. The Green Mind student says, "I control my success by working better and working differently, not by working harder."

MAVERICK is the Green Mind in action. Of all the tactics for crafting the Green Mind, research proves which can turbocharge learning best. M.A.V.E.R.I.C.K. represents those tactics: Mastery through Active, Verbal, Explaining & aRguing, with Intense focus that Connects Knowledge. MAVERICK is the Supreme Collection of Study Tactics: purposeful, informed, targeted actions to produce long-term learning, faster.

A battle rages in your mind between the Gray Mind and the Green Mind. Working "Gray" is treading water in a shallow intellectual pond of disconnected facts, wasted time, and "fake studying." The Gray Mind is about "doing" the work.

Choose Green not Gray. Work to learn; don't work to work. With MAVERICK, purpose drives actions. Now, Michael Chellman, an award-winning teacher who has inspired young people from middle through high school, provides the proven tactics students are desperate to hear.

What type of student do you want to become? What actions will get you there? With this book, students develop their own "Way" of learning: A collection of actions they choose and refine to achieve Mastery in any subject. The MAVERICK Approach: Anyone can improve when using a targeted set of actions that fit how they learn best.

Here, at last, is specific guidance that goes beyond empty advice to "work harder" and "have grit." The Green Mind student asserts, "I control how I learn. I can get better at getting better—the MAVERICK Way."

Practice makes perfect? No. MAVERICK makes Mastery.

About the Author

As Michael Chellman sees his current and former students walking through campus, he has an unusual exchange that takes observers by surprise. "Good to see you," Chellman says. "Are you doing your work?" That seems routine until the student exclaims, "Never! I never do my work!"

Pull the student aside and you'll discover what's going on. "I never do my work," the student will explain, "because I LEARN my work. Big difference. It's the Green Mind!"

Michael Chellman is an award-winning teacher with over 30 years of experience in an array of schools: public, independent, co-ed, single gender. From tiny rural schools to one of the largest public school systems in the nation, Chellman has helped an array of students achieve more learning, less "doing," faster. "The worst advice ever," he claims, "is when we tell kids to 'work harder.' Learning is about working differently, working better."

Some secondary teachers don't want to teach 6th graders (too young). Some don't want to teach anyone in middle school. Some avoid high school freshmen. Others stay away from 12th graders in the spring (senior slump). Michael Chellman has taught them all, grades 6 through 12. And the message is the same, appropriately adapted: "Please don't do your work." From middle through high school, students can dive deep into their studies for learning that lasts.

For 10 years, Chellman was also the Editor and Publisher of the education journal, ClassWise, distributed internationally by subscription.
