Overview

Turtle wakes up one day and finds trash floating in the nearby river. He sets out on a mission to tell his animal friends to clean up and recycle. Blinded by the fact that Turtle is green, the grass is green and green is his favorite color, Turtle comes up with a rhyme to help solve the problem and spread the news to keep the earth clean. “Green means clean, you got to have green each and every day!” Turtle would like everyone, even you the reader, to practice recycling and find ways to reuse their trash and keep the earth clean.

Green Means Clean uses simple rhymes to teach the value of recycling. Teachers can also incorporate the use of this book in their lesson plans to help develop critical thinking skills, problem solve and ask questions. Teachers can also use this book in their cross curricular approach as it incorporates language arts, math, science and of course art.

Chapter One

Turtle woke one morning and decided to go for a walk. He met his friend Rabbit, and they had a nice talk.

Rabbit said, "Did you see the trash by the river?"

"Yes," said Turtle. "And the smell makes me shiver."

"There is more and more each week!" said Rabbit. "We have to clean it up before it spreads. It reeks!"

"Yes," said Turtle. "Green means clean, I always say! We have to have green each and every day!"

Rabbit shook his head.

"Oh, Turtle! You have been saying that day in and day out. If I hear it one more time, I am going to shout."

"Shout if you must," said Turtle. "But I am tired. Please sit down. Remember, things are not good if the land is all brown."

"Green means clean, I always say. We have to have green, come what may!"

"But what can we do?" said Rabbit. "It's just you and me!"

"No!" said Bird, who was perched in a tree.

"I've been listening, and that makes three!"

"I will tell Raccoon, who knows Mr. Fox! He will go to the farm and tell Mrs. Ox."

"Yes, yes, she knows the farmer who plows all the hay."

"He will tell others on Grand Market Day!"

"What a good idea!" said Cricket, who was hiding under a rock. "I will tell my friends who work on the dock."

"On my way, I go to tell some more. By the way, that makes me 'Green Means Clean' number four."
