Overview

In 1989, I began studying for a Bachelor's of
Literature at Tổng Hợp University (now the University
of Social Sciences & Humanities at Đinh Tiên Hoàng
Street, Sàigòn, Vietnam). I enjoyed reading books
and reflecting on their ideas and I spent wonderful
moments in the university's library or in a corner of
the nearby temple. I especially enjoyed reading about
moral philosophy and the beautiful, clear world that
the authors described.
The writers used simple but profound language
that expressed beautiful values which explained the
true meaning of life the authors wanted to share. The
words seemed to be like an abundance of golden
pearls, harvested by benevolent people. Together
they presented an ethical model for those to better
themselves though meditation and contemplation, as
L. Paxto says: "The career of a person is big or small
depending on his high or low character. Happy are
those who carry within themselves a beautiful ideal
that they unswervingly follow".
In the 1990s, before the ever-present technology
that surrounds us appeared, Google, Wiki, YouTube,
cellphones, etc., I had the habit of collecting beautiful
quotations, words and ideas and writing them down in
notebooks. I spent all my time reading-library books,
class lectures, fliers, even old newspapers I used to
wrap sticky rice beans and pepper cakes stained with
fried oil. I gathered them all together and cherished
them in my bag, just as a collector of precious antiques,

or as a baby saving every penny from her parents as
Duxuya Men asserted: ''You use your wallet to save
what is important, so it should include a few scraps of
paper to record your thoughts and those of others. It is
a small step that can help you and others achieve great
things", or as Hải Thượng Lãn Ông said: "Towering
mountains all started from the grain of sand".
This collection is called Good Words Nurture

Danh Ngôn Nuôi Dưỡng Nhân
Cách) and the contents are listed under 194 topics,
including hundreds and thousands of golden examples
to constantly nurture the personality. Here are a few
examples: "The path of life is a ladder without hiccups,
learning is a book without a last page" (Kalamin),
"Jade is only a pearl when it is honed. Otherwise, it
is only a stone" (ancient saying), ''Gold has its price,
but knowledge is priceless. The erudite intellectual is
the diamond whose light shines through the culture"
(anonymous). This collection of 194 proverbs or good
words will help readers change their perspective about
the way we live, and learn how to behave wisely,
skillfully, honestly, and ultimately develop wisdom.
This book is a spiritual gift from a collector who
has amassed nine handwritten notebooks, each with
100 pages, and recorded over a period of more than
thirty years. Here is the collection, gathered, typed,
translated into English and presented to inspire others
to take up this rewarding hobby. Sincere thanks to
the named and anonymous authors who created
these quotations, profound, clever and occasionally
humorous presented here for everyone's benefit. You
will make many mistakes when collecting-wrong
attributions, or grammatical errors. But remember the

meanings are more important than the source. Many
quotations of foreign authors, when collected in the
Vietnamese language (not originally in English),
should now be translated into English which must be
different from the author's style. I look forward to the
comments of wise readers near and far to improve the
next edition.
On this occasion, we would also like to express
our sincere acknowledgements to the English
translators (Venerable Bhikkhuni Giới Hương and
Pamela Kirby), the typewriter team (Bhikkhunī Viên
Tiến), the Vietnamese spelling editor (Mrs. Thanh Phi)
and the design, publishing and distribution of books
(Bhikkhuni Viên Quang) and many more.
Ipxen said: "Any person, a great person or an
ordinary person will become a poet, if seen behind
his gestures an ideal". Wishing you all to become the
poets who will succeed in living up to your ideals.
