Notes From Your Bookseller

We found it difficult to turn away. The three-person alternating narration put us right there with the characters — Jessica, Stephanie and Priyanka — and had us wondering “What if...?” the whole way.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

An emotional and powerfully evocative story. Ray has expertly crafted a thoughtful and important read that ends with a stunning surprise." —Liv Constantine, bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish

“Multilayered, unflinchingly honest, and teeming with nerve-shattering suspense, Good Husbands by Cate Ray had me flying through the pages. Ray has created a much needed space for complex conversations surrounding consent and whether we really know the people we love. An absolute triumph.” —Heather Gudenkauf, bestselling author of The Overnight Guest

“The most riveting and unflinching he said/she said novel to date, Good Husbands follows three women whose lives are set on a collision course upon the arrival of an unsettling letter about each of their husbands. Absolutely staggering, insanely gripping, and wholly unputdownable, this riveting, unsettling suspense will leave you gasping for air and for answers and will have you turning the pages until the last, final, astonishing twist. With her hypnotic, dazzling prose and captivating characters, Cate Ray is a masterful storyteller at the height of her powers.”
—May Cobb, author of The Hunting Wives

Good Husbands is both a gripping thriller and a thought-provoking exploration of toxic masculinity and female friendship. I couldn’t put it down.” —Sarah Haywood, bestselling author of The Cactus

Three women, three letters, three lives changed forever. When Jess, Stephanie, and Priyanka are suddenly thrust together by a voice from the past, accusing their husbands of rape, they must decide how far they are willing to go to find the truth—and whether they even want to. Unearthing clues in the decades-old case creates an unbreakable bond among the wives, while driving an imposing wedge in their marriages. In her U.S. debut, Ray (previously published as Cath Weeks, Friends Don't Lie) has crafted a slowly building drama that tackles issues of sexual assault and spousal suspicion. It's billed as psychological suspense but reads more like domestic fiction, and the final reveal falls flat in comparison with all the questions raised throughout. Narrators Fiona Hardingham, Shivali Bhammer, and Karen Cass are an engaging trio, giving unique personalities to the three first-person narratives. Despite the lack of thrills, the narrators keep the listening experience captivating and compelling. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a mildly suspenseful domestic drama with a narrative that is atmospheric, though not exhilarating. Recommended for fans of Greer Hendricks, B.A. Paris, and Shari Lapena.—Lauren Hackert

Was it rape? Or a night of drunken but mutual revelry, as three men desperately wish to believe while they bury the past? More than 20 years later, their wives Jessica, Stephanie, and Priyanka—ignorant of the event and strangers to one another—receive a shocking letter compelling them to seek the truth. From British suspense author Cath Weeks, writing pseudonymously with this U.S. debut; with a 100,000-copy paperback first printing.
