Description: This handbook serves to help student clinicians transition from preclinical status to taking care of patients in the clinic and hospital. It not only covers the very basics of how healthcare teams function in the hospital, but also addresses terms and concepts from lab to imaging to nutrition to bedside procedures. Each chapter includes illustrations, images, and tables to augment the information presented. This is the 12th edition.
Purpose: This book serves to fill in knowledge gaps that beginning student clinicians may experience during inpatient and outpatient rotations. On a daily basis, students will run into lab descriptions, imaging studies, procedures, among other tests that they may not fully understand, and this reference will help to augment understanding. The book does meet those objectives. While there is a plethora of online resources available, having one reference that can be stashed into a bookbag and carted from rotation to rotation can be helpful as an additional resource.
Audience: This book is written for early student clinicians and could be useful to medical students, physician assistant students, and nurse practitioner students. It also can serve as a refresher for early career clinicians or as a resource for those who routinely teach student learners. In my opinion, the book targets all specialties as we take care of patients collectively and it is important to possess an understanding of other specialties' interventions. The authors and contributors appear to possess the credentials needed in their respective areas.
Features: The book starts with basic concepts such as the healthcare team, completing a history and physical, and giving presentations to attendings. It then progresses to more clinically relevant material. The book does a good job of covering the multitude of lab tests available and what the tests are looking for clinically. The book is written in a style that is easy to follow. The chapters use illustrations and tables to augment points of importance. One might consider a chapter on POCUS. Some of this information is included in bedside procedures, but this is becoming a more frequently used tool. Also, one might consider a short chapter on discharge planning. It is important to help learners think about what the next step is to get patients to a lower status of care (i.e., from the ICU to the floor) and what is needed to make sure patients can be safely discharged home with appropriate resources.
Assessment: This book covers an impressive depth and scope of material for student learners. It will be a helpful addition to any inpatient rounding team for quick reference. It will also be a useful reference when precepting medical students in private practice. Though I have not read prior editions, this updated edition is appropriate, as the book was last published in 2007.
