Golden Girl follows Nantucket novelist Vivi, who gets one final summer — after she is killed in a hit-and-run accident — to protect her secrets and learn from her mistakes while her loved ones still on earth try to solve the mystery of her death.

Vivian Howe, author of 13 beach novels and mother of three young adults, is killed in a hit and run car accident while jogging near her home in Nantucket. She ascends to the Beyond where she's assigned to a Person named Margaret, who agrees Vivi's death was unfair. Margaret allows Vivi to watch what happens below with her children, her best friend, her ex-husband, and her rival novelist (whose book is coming out the same day as Vivi's).

Margaret gives Vivi the use of three "nudges" so that she might influence the outcome of events in the world of the living. Vivi discovers her children's secrets, watches the investigation of her death (headed by Chief Ed Kapenash from The Perfect Couple) and worries about a secret from her youth, fictionalized in her novel, coming to light.

About the Author

Elin Hilderbrand is the proud mother of three, a dedicated Peloton rider, an aspiring book influencer, and an enthusiastic at-home cook (follow her on Instagram @elinhilderbrand to watch her Cringe Cooking Show). She is also a grateful seven-year breast cancer survivor. Golden Girl is her 27th novel.

In death, she goes to "the Beyond," where she is allowed to watch her family for one summer and is granted three "nudges" to influence their behavior from afar. Vivian now learns her family's secrets, such as her youngest daughter's affair with a much older in-law. Flashbacks to her early life show Vivian as a whole person and reveal how she and her family arrived at their pre-crash lives. A thread of mystery—who is the driver who killed Vivian?—runs throughout; her son's best friend had been the one to find her dying at the side of the road, so many on the small island suspect him, especially because of his subsequent odd behavior. Like Hilderbrand's other books, this title focuses on friendships and family, as well as women rivals and enemies.
