Overview

The book by author Joel Drotts Esq. is an historical-fiction-action-adventure-love-story which questions what the correct role is for modern law enforcement in society not only in the past, but in present day society as well. However, that analyses is done in the 1849-1855 period of time in San Francisco where there was no official law enforcement, and the city was ran by Committees of Vigilances. These committees being half police force half mafioso in nature serve as both protagonist and allies to Marshall Justice (Lead character) and his love interest Catherine as they make their way through the rough streets of San Francisco and the gold fields in order to protect the gold and rights that are theirs from the greedy committees of vigilances that have designs on that which is rightfully the young couples. As an ex-Calvary officer and brawler Justice is more than up to the task of aiding Catherine in protecting what is hers. However, Catherine is far from a damsel in destress and quickly learns she's going to have to hold her own in this environment where the authority are corrupted murderers and justice is usually only had at the end of a gun barrel.

Justice meets Catherine while making his way to San Francisco. While there is an instant attraction between them they dare not act upon it out of respect for the fact Catherine is sailing to meet her husband on the same boat headed to San Francisco in 1849. Disembarking from the boat in San Francisco, the main character Marshall Justice is forced to come to terms with the fact he will never again see the woman whose life he saved on board the boat, and who possibly is the woman of his dreams, because she is married to the man she was traveling to meet. All though they shared an intense friendship and mutual attraction for each other after the night Justice saved her life, they both know they must unhappily go their separate ways now that they have arrived in San Francisco. Justice decides to stay the week in San Francisco before heading to the gold fields in the Sierra foothills, and decides to take in the sights of the "Wickedest Town on Earth" his last night before he leaves. To his surprise Justice again finds Catherine in a most compromised position, who informs Justice she again is in need of his assistance as she is currently being held captive by the leader of the most powerful and corrupt of the committees of vigilance in the City of San Francisco against her will. What follows is an exciting action packed non-stop adventure shared between Catherine and Justice as they try to maneuver themselves into a position to take back and hold on to what the powerful and evil committee boss Jake has designs on to make his own.

About the Author

Joel Drotts Esq. is a forty-three year old, Californian Bay Area native, who has lived either in or near the City of San Francisco all his life. Joel has always had a passion for both history and writing, both of which have come to play and married each other very well in the authorship of Golden Dreams of San Francisco. After graduating from JFK School of Law with his Juris Doctorate in 2009, Joel became particularly interested in the history of the City he was living in at the time. That City being San Francisco made the history thereof real interesting and fun to research, especially during the period of time the book is set in.

Right after gold was discovered in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains news of that discovery rang out across the entire planet, which resulted in every dreamer, person trying to escape their past, people looking for a new start, would be minors, investors, traders, hookers, religious zealots, Mexicans, Chinese, Russians, Australians, and of course Americans from the east coast all flooded into the City of San Francisco between 1849 to 1855 causing the population of the City to grow by 10,000 a month through 1849 to 1851. The City grew so fast and so unexpectedly that none of the usual governmental services or institutions usually found in big cities existed. The most interesting was the complete lack of any police force what so ever to police an ever expanding and ever increasingly rowdy city full of new comers. Instead the peace in San Francisco at that time was kept by Committees of Vigilance. However, more often than not these committees were the ones breaking the peace, and most often by fighting with each other over the control of turf and the right to collect protection money from the businesses inside that turf.

Growing up in and around San Francisco, the City and its culture clearly had a large influence on Joel as an individual and as an author. However, not in the manner most people come to believe people from San Francisco view the world or life in general. This is the second book written by Joel, and both take place in San Francisco during vastly different time periods and circumstances, but both hint at the Cities sketchier subcultures.

Joel definitely had fun researching such an interesting place and time period, and it shows in the action thriller Golden Dreams of San Francisco. You should also check out Joel's unrelated first book Vampire Hitman from San Francisco. Also a fun read.
