A Journey of the Heart is a 47,000 word non-fiction journal in the American literary tradition of philosophical travelogues. Harry’s journey across America in 1986 with his grown son opens a dialogue as wide as the Midwestern plains. The two generations, born from vastly different Americas, can never be reconciled, but they can understand each other. And in frank dialogue, Harry, his marriage failing, confronts his past, and his assumptions about what the rest of his life holds. Throughout this account of a two-week trip in a pickup truck, the American landscape, both awesome in natural beauty, and garish and tacky in its exploitation, is itself a character with which the reader must contend.

About the Author

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Hugh Aaron (Max Barnet) was educated in the Worcester Public Schools, and received a Liberal Arts degree in the Humanities at The University of Chicago. He served three years in the Seabees during World War II, two of them in the Southwest Pacific. He has three children, now self-sufficient adults. He was CEO of his own manufacturing business for 20 years before selling it to write full time. Several of his short stories have been published in national magazines and 18 essays on business management and one on WWII appeared in The Wall Street Journal.

Thus far he has written two novels, two screenplays, seventeen stageplays, two short story collections, a WWI letter collection, a travel journal, three children’s stories, five novellas and a book (Business Not As Usual) on business management. He lives with his artist wife in mid-coast Maine.

Go West Old Man is a touching story of a man's journey across the country with his son. It outlines the struggles and joys of the relationship between child and parent, and speaks to every one of us. I found it to be full of honesty and much soul-searching. How wonderful it would be if every parent had at least one such pilgrimage with their child! I was impressed by this man's courage, and willingness to open himself to a deeper relationship with his son.
