Gr 5-7-These well-organized books should be considered as replacements for aging introductions to these subjects. Double-page chapters introduce topics such as "The atmosphere and the weather" and "What is nuclear power?" through brief paragraphs of information. Numerous colorful photographs, graphs, and diagrams with informative captions add details on each spread. In both titles, the authors present the U.S. refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol in a neutral tone. Both books include simple experiments to reinforce the concepts presented and boxed, practical suggestions of actions that will help protect the environment. Plenty of white space on each page will lure reluctant readers. The four titles in this series focus on different aspects of global environmental problems. The back cover of each volume announces that the book will present the truth behind major environmental issues, explain the real situation, and describe some practical solutions. The authors all use recent events and statistic that relate to their topic. The descriptions and examples will be easily understood by the younger student. Photographs as well as labeled diagrams clearly illustrate the text. Directions for simple experiments are described in inserts titled "Science in Action." Practical solutions to the various environmental problems are found in the "How You Can Help" and "Sustainable Solutions" inserts. The information is accurate, and the solutions teach readers that there is something they can do to make a difference. The four books begin with explanations of the subject at hand. In particular, Oil Spills describes the global oil supply, the risks associated with transporting oil, the effects of a spill, and a variety of remediation methods, and Nuclear Waste reviews atomic structure and various types of radiation before describing the operation of a nuclear power plant and its decommissioning. Each volume has an index, a glossary with definitions for all italicized terms within the text, and a "Further Information" page that lists a number of Web sites one can use to learn more about topics mentioned in the book. These books would be a valuable asset to any children's library and a good resource for a science student to have at home. Recommended.
