[Orenstein] has done parents the great favor of having this important debate with herself on paper and in public; she has fashioned an argument with its seams showing and its pockets turned inside out, and this makes her book far more interesting, and more useful.

Peggy Orenstein paints a complicated picture of what it means to be a young woman in today’s technological age. As narrator, Orenstein delivers her work in a matter-of-fact, conversational tone with the right amount of emphasis, and, where relevant, attitude—particularly when quoting the women she interviewed. She proves highly effective as a narrator with smooth transitions, confident projection, and the ability to change tone quickly. Her voice moves smoothly from paragraph to paragraph and topic to topic, keeping a friendly tone that encourages the listener to better understand the complexity of becoming a woman in an age of selfies, sexting, and contradictory messages about how to negotiate one’s sexual identity.
