About the Author

Emilie Buchwald is the author of two award-winning children’s novels, Gildaen and Floramel and Esteban (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, reissued by Milkweed Editions), and, under her maiden name of Daisy Bix, the picture books Buddy Unchained and At the Dog Park (The Gryphon Press). A poet and fiction writer, she has taught literature, poetry writing, writing for children, and speaks frequently about publishing and contemporary literature. A graduate of Barnard College, she has a Master of Arts in English from Columbia University, a Ph.D. in English Literature, and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Minnesota. Buchwald is the publisher emeritus and cofounder of Milkweed Editions, the editor or coeditor of 200 books that have won more than 200 awards and distinctions, with over a million books in print when she retired in 2003. She has received the McKnight Artist of the Year Award, the Kay Sexton Award for service to Minnesota’s literary community, in 2008, the National Book Critic’s Circle Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2009, the A. P. Anderson Award. Buchwald founded The Gryphon Press (www.thegryphonpress.com) in 2006 to bring high-quality children’s picture books about animal issues and the human-animal bond to children and parents.
