Overview

The growing geriatric population in the United States has created an increasing need for palliative medicine services across the range of medical and surgical specialties. Yet, palliative medicine lacks the resources to carry such a workload itself. Description: This is a clinically focused palliative care handbook with disease-specific information on palliative care for the elderly.
Purpose: The purpose is to integrate the core principles and practices of the two related and complementary specialties of geriatrics and palliative care in a clear, user-friendly format to assist physicians, nurses, social workers, and other disciplines who want to offer patient-centered care for older persons and their families. In recent years there has been a plethora of references on palliative care and, although this book has a geriatric focus, the content is not significantly different from other palliative care books currently available.
Audience: The book is intended for a broad audience encompassing multiple disciplines, and it is written in a manner that would appeal to those in many specialties. Trainees, including medical students, resident and fellow physicians, and nurse practitioner students would find this a useful reference. The authors are nationally known and are considered experts in the fields of geriatrics and palliative care.
Features: In addition to covering the core principles of the two specialties of geriatrics and palliative care, the book also covers specific topics ranging from emergencies in palliative care to communication. It is divided in sections that allow readers to explore topics by categories, such as special issues in geriatric palliative care, caregivers, symptoms, diseases and syndromes, and the interdisciplinary team. The chapters on advance care planning and communication skills contain exceptional, user-friendly, succinct information that novices or generalist would find of particular value. One shortcoming of the book is that it is written at a very basic level, perhaps too basic for those already practicing palliative care or geriatrics.
Assessment: This is a well-written, easy-to-read book. It covers many topics at a very basic level, making it an exceptional reference for students, trainees, and generalists. There are many other books specific to palliative care and to geriatrics, but none that blend the two.
