Overview

George John Markulis, was proclaimed by the author, his number two son to be the Mythical Greek God of Coal Mining of Carbon County utah. He earned the reputation of being the greatest coal miner in Carbon County, as he was able to bring out more coal in one day, than any other coal miner. The story goes on to tell you his life story working the coal mines for over 30 years, going back to Greece to marry a Greek woman, returning to America and raising five sons through some of the harshest times America or the world experienced, the Great Depression of the 1930s. During the Depression, he moved his family from one coal mining shanty town to another. He moved his family to Pennsylvania where he offered enployment that did not work out. After working the coal mines of Pennsylvania for a few years he returned to Utah, as employment opportunities were coming back. An eye sugary, removing one eye due to Glaucoma, caused George to retire from his 30 year coal mining career. He moved his famiy to California where went into the restaurant business for another 28 years. He passed away on December 1 1985, 37 days minus from being 100 years old. About the Author

Michael George Markulis is a 90 year old author and son of George John Markulis, subject of the book he authored, about working the coal mines of Utah. Born in 1931 in Mutual, Utah to immigrant Greek parents, moving to several states where his father could find employment. The Great Depression 0f the 1930s caused many hardships for the family. Michael served in the Korean War and after his service married his childhood sweetheart and raised two children. They were married for 55 years when she said her goodbyes to be with our Lord. They have two chilren and three grandchildren who bring joy and happiness into his life.

Michael earned an Associate of Arts and a Bachelor of Arts Degres in Police Science and Public Administration . Following a 37-year career with the Los Angeles Po;ice Department, he taught part-time for 30 years in several Community Colleges in Los Angeles. Upon his retirement from the LAPD, he was hired by the University of Southern California (USC) as the Director of the prestigious Delinquency Control Institute under the School of Public Adminstration.
