This set of ten essays, written by political scientists for political scientists, surveys empirical research into the effects of gender on the American political system. Divided into three sections, the essays examine the political behavior of men and women, the gender dimension of specific public policies (e.g., welfare legislation, tax codes, medical research, and abortion), and the role women play in government institutions (women as cabinet officers, judges, and congressional candidates). Two pieces treat the question of whether women reason differently from men (as asserted by Carol Gilligan), both concluding that differences have been overstated. With an academic audience in mind, the writers generally pose abstruse questions and employ highly technical methodologies to investigate them. In many cases, we learn that the results are mixed and the differences marginal.
