Description: The fact that this quick reference guide to intravenous medications is now in its 35th edition itself demonstrates its importance. An accompanying website contains updates and new monographs for medications, tutorials for calculating IV drug dosages, calculators, dosage examples, and compatibility charts that are printable.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick and easy reference for nurses and other healthcare professionals who administer intravenous medications. The book has the most current information and includes safety information identified by the FDA with Black Box Warnings as well as all the information about the medication. The material is also reproduced in a mobile app, but the print handbook needs to be available at nurses' stations or on medication carts. There are free parts of the app that are useful.
Audience: As the title indicates, the audience is nurses and healthcare professionals, but it also might include MDs, PAs, PharmDs, techs, and nursing students in training. Although the authors do not include students in their audience, the book is excellent for use in medical-surgical and intensive care courses. The book should be available at oncology clinics because of the attention it gives to administering medications for cancer. It should be available in hospitals and any other clinics in which IV medications are administered. The first author is a nurse consultant in education and an RN, the second author is a PharmD, and the third author is a staff nurse who has experience with IV medications. The consultants and reviewers are largely PharmDs.
Features: This handbook includes all the necessary information about IV medications, rates of administration, and dilutions, along with tables to guide dosing, bolded warnings and special precautions, and a good deal of additional important information in the appendixes. The format for each medication is the same to avoid confusion and make the book easy to read. The appendixes include valuable information on dilutions, recommendations for safety for use and handling of cytotoxic drugs, FDA pregnancy categories, information for patients, and a compatibility chart with a list of abbreviations. Also useful is the highlighting (shaded) used for instant identification of the most important information regarding each medication. These are all important aspects of the book.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for nurses, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals to help them provide safe and effective intravenous medications to clients. It is the best guide available that I know of. One huge advantage is its spiral binding, allowing it to be folded open and used while preparing for administration. New editions are necessary due to the high number of new medications that come onto the market each year.
