Description: This is the fifth edition of a book detailing the essentials of disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system in children.
Purpose: Lynn T. Staheli has spent his entire medical career caring for children with orthopedic problems and he shares his insights in this book. He is emeritus professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine and emeritus editor of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics.
Audience: The intended audience is primary care physicians, particularly pediatricians.
Features: The 13 chapters cover topics such as growth, trauma, sports, lower limb, upper limb, spine, pelvis, and so on. The author uses abundant color photographs, illustrations, and radiographs, which are of excellent quality. The colorful chapters are both easy to read and present engaging material. Parent education materials are useful and current. Access to an interactive ebook is included with this edition.
Assessment: I highly recommend this book to all primary care physicians caring for children. Orthopedists trying to brush up on pediatric orthopedics can benefit by reading this most enlightening book.

In his preface to the first edition, the author proposed ""to make learning the basics of pediatric orthopedics a rapid and pleasant experience,"" and he succeeded admirably. The second edition has been updated and modified, with the addition of new illustrations, updated reading lists, and a completely new chapter on sports medicine. Among the recently published textbooks of orthopedic surgery, this text is unique in that it presents a broad range of information in a format that is easy to access and to understand. The broad range of information included in this text makes it especially valuable to pediatricians, family medicine physicians, primary care physicians, pediatric and orthopedic residents, and medical students. With an emphasis on fundamentals, the author has integrated information on etiology, evaluation, differential diagnosis, and treatment with clinical photographs, line art, and easy-to-read charts and graphs that give a succinct overview of information that would be laborious to follow in text form. The numerous headings and subheadings that divide each chapter make locating specific information quick and easy. From his expertise and experience, the author provides clear and pragmatic treatment recommendations for a myriad of orthopedic conditions in children. A unique aspect of this text is an emphasis on the overall well-being of the child -- physical, social, and psychological -- as a foremost consideration, and the author outlines some ""philosophical and practical"" guidelines for maintaining this primary objective. A special section at the end of the book answers frequently asked questions and even provides handouts that can be copied and offered to thefamily to help them understand their child's condition. In short, this colorful, concise text will be a valuable addition to the library of any physician who cares for children and will provide a quick overview as well as a resource for more in-depth study. The pediatric orthopedist will recommend this text to his or her colleagues as a superb reference text for ""thumb nail sketches"" of the many musculoskeletal conditions that affect children.
