This is an organized, attractively designed, hardbound fundamental textbook of nursing. The purpose is to provide healthcare providers with a holistic, diverse, scientific, technical base of knowledge with a commitment to interpersonal caring and accountability. It has been written for nurses, especially beginning nurses, to enhance their nursing practice in traditional and nontraditional healthcare settings. However, other healthcare students and advanced practice nurses could use the text as well. The book features organized units, color-coordinated charts and topical information, definitions of terms in the inside cover of the book, a holistic approach, care competencies, inclusion of diverse population groups, traditional and nontraditional settings, communication skills, related research, in-depth glossary, and updated references. This highly readable text presents the content logically and accurately. This excellent textbook is of higher quality than other current textbooks on fundamental nursing. Information has been written to provide the learner with a systematic, logical, and sequential format. Each chapter has an extended overview with objectives and key terms, key points, guidelines for care, and a bibliography. All these features enhance the beginning student's attention span and motivation to learn. There are no gaps in the written material. It would have been interesting to know what the nursing practice standards of nursing associations in other countries are. This textbook would be valuable to students.

Description: This nursing fundamentals book begins each chapter with situations that ask students to identify blended skills (cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills) needed to solve patient care problems. Three units have end of chapter multiple choice questions. Critical thinking exercises and chapter objectives at the end of all chapters help students to review content. The prior edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The authors state that this book promotes the art and science of nursing by asking students to focus on the blended skills necessary to serve individual patients and the public in what has become a business, rather than care oriented healthcare system. The organization of this book helps to achieve this important goal.
Audience: This book is written for registered nurse students enrolled in fundamentals of nursing courses. Both ADN and BSN students could use this book, but the depth seems more appropriate for ADN students.
Features: The authors begin this book with a variety of topics central to giving nursing care such as community based care, the nursing process, and promoting health across the lifespan. Unique features include quotes from students regarding their learning about nursing care and quotes from patients about their response to nursing care. Some chapters have text boxes for "Research in Nursing: Making a Difference." All chapters have critical thinking exercises. The authors show how the blended skills are performed in acute and community-based settings. One shortcoming is that some basic information is out of date. For instance one of the accreditation bodies for nursing education was misnamed and biographical data on a nursing leader did not reflect that this person had died several years before this edition was published. Another shortcoming is that some of the early chapters in the book list NANDA nursing diagnoses before the in depth discussion of nursing process.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for associate degree students, but faculty in baccalaureate programs would want to provide additional information when presenting topics. A rapidly changing healthcare system justifies any new edition of a fundamentals of nursing book and this book is no exception.
